You could try one of courses below, or why not have a specific course produced for your organisation which can also be accredited if you would prefer?

IOSH Effective Safety Coach and Mentor – 2 day course

This course is aimed to develop the interpersonal skills of safety and line management personnel when engaging with key decision makers.

Do any of the following situations sound familiar to either you personally or the place you work?

  • All of our safety systems and procedures are in place and working well,

But we are still experiencing incidents and are not sure what to do differently now

  • None of our line managers is actively negative about safety. But with so much else going on in the business they are not doing what they need to do on safety
  • My team of safety advisors are good. In fact they were integral in the business’s safety improvement over the last 5 years. It’s just that their interpersonal skills are not up to the current challenges we face
  • I know what we need to do to bridge the final gap from good safety to great safety management. It’s just that I can’t find a way to get all the business leaders to consistently work with me on it
  • All of our line managers are a different character. They all have their own particular ways of avoiding what they need to do on safety
  • We have now done so much ’telling and ‘instructing’ on safety that it is having a negative effect. We now need the management and workforce to find their own motivation to keep the momentum on safety
  • Because middle and senior management’s behaviour towards safety seems unengaged and inconsistent, so is the rest of the workforce

If one of more points above is true, you could be missing one of the final pieces of the jigsaw to make a lasting sustainable improvement on how you engage with others.

The IOSH Effective Safety Coach and Mentor course is delivered by Rob Shore and Simon Taylor. Both have worked together over a number of years through a Senior Manager and Safety Coach relationship.  Following successfully coaching of many safety professionals and line managers on coaching and mentoring techniques, we decided to put our work together a training course to summarise our experiences

The course is carried out over two full days and includes sessions on the following :-

  • Introduction to coaching and mentoring
  •  ‘Getting Buy-In’
  • Reasons for change; ‘The Triggers’
  • Planning for different leadership styles (some of the characters are to the right)
  • Questioning and listening
  • Using reflection in coaching
  • Mentoring approaches
  • Tools to assist engagement
  • Getting commitment to measurable safety performance

Following the main learning sessions there are two elements to the course assessment:

  • Multiple-choice assessment paper
  • An observed coaching meeting held with one of our expert coaches

On course completion delegates will take away:

  • An IOSH certificate on successful completion of the course assessments
  • A 70 page detailed course handbook

You might be thinking how does this translate into better safety? We believe that safety should be led by the people who lead the business. If the interaction with these individuals is regular, planned and also includes those other qualities, you will see a dramatic change in safety performance. We have experienced how this relationship can really work to deliver results. Through this course we share our experiences and set challenging exercises in relation to what you will experience in your efforts to reduce
workplace injuries.

This course can be delivered at your place of work or alternatively an external venue can be organized to deliver an in-house company course. Course numbers should be between 8 – 14 people.

Alternatively we run public courses, more details can be found HERE

This could be the trigger you need to start to make a dramatic improvement to your safety performance….
